Pantech plans to bring touchless gestures to Android phones

The folks over at Pantech will be introducing touchless gestures with its new Vega LTE line of phones that will hit the market in November (in Korea – no word on a US release yet). The Kinect-like gesture technology will help consumers to use their touchscreen devices under certain conditions i.e. when their hands are dirty, they’re wearing gloves or even when they’re driving and their phone is mounted or on the passenger’s seat. Things they’ll be able to do include answering/rejecting calls and playing music. Then again, how many gestures do you really when you’re in a situation where you can’t hold the phone with your own hands?

Varley's evR450 all-electric supercar set to hit Australian roads next year

While it'll no doubt turn a few heads simply standing still, it also looks to measure up reasonably well under the hood, boasting a top speed of 200 kilometers per hour (or 124 MPH) and a zero to 100 km/h time of 3.8 seconds. The company's also promising a range of 150 kilometers (or 93 miles) that can be doubled with an optional range-extension pack, although its not letting anyone actually drive the car just yet (or even look under the hood, for that matter). As for a price, Varley's saying that the base package will come in "below" $200,000 Australian dollars (or about $213,000 US), and it says it could roll out "as early as January 2012."

Acer outs AZ3, AZ5, Veriton Z Series all-in-ones, starting at $650

The higher-end AZ5 provides a 23-inch expanse of full HD, multi-touch glory, a minimum Core i3-2120 processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory and a 1TB HDD, all for the sum of $750. Next up is the AZ3, which saves you $100 by cutting the screen size to 21 inches, switching to an AMD dual-core A4 APU (along with a discreet Radeon HD6410) and slimming the HDD down to 500GB. Both models come with an adjustable stand, two side-mounted USB 3.0 ports (plus four USB 2.0 ports on the rear) and a built-in webcam and mic. Meanwhile, Acer's new Veriton all-in-ones target enterprise users who are prepared to sacrifice those high-def media credentials in favor of better performance and a smaller, more office-friendly footprint -- the 20-inch Z2620G, for instance, packs a Core i5-2400s quad-core processor and NVIDIA GeFore GT 520M GPU for $850.

Purple HTC EVO 3D will cost just $50 on Amazon

The HTC EVO 3D was a one off device that rolled in from HTC’s kitchen that offered a good deal in the media line as well. It packs a glass-free 3D display and tried to capture the majority mediaholics who often look at HTC as a brand that drives more utility and application than fun. To hype things up, the company has introduced a purple variant of this phone.

Volta BCN electric motorcycle announced, set to go on sale in Q2 2012

Volta Motorbikes officially announced its new Volta BCN motorcycle this week, with a complete unveiling set for the EICMA Motorshow in Milan next month. It will be available in three different models -- the BCN Sport, BCN City, and BCN My Volta -- each of which pack the same 35 horsepower and 70 kilometer range, but have various other tweaks to suit different tastes (with the My Volta being customizable through an online ordering tool). Details remain a bit light otherwise, but pricing is expected to come in around the €7,000 mark (or just under $10,000), with the first units set to roll out in the second quarter of 2012 .

Nokia bends reality with Kinetic bendy phone

The name itself gives the game away, where you will be able to control this unique smartphone not through a touchscreen user interface like what we’re so used to, but rather, by bending and twisting it – heck, even squeezing it if it is required. It seems that those who have given it a go found it rather difficult to put down, and I would not think otherwise. Some say that this is one of the most tactile gadget that they have ever put their hands on, and I am quite sure that should the Kinectic handset make it big in real life, most folks will be walking around while flexing and curving their phones – instead of lovingly letting their fingers dance all over the screen like how we’re used to. You twist the phone to scroll through your files, while twisting will control the speed. It seems that the more you twist, the faster you scroll. Should you, in your enthusiasm, go too far, then all you need to do is twist back slowly until the file or contact you want is highlighted.

Nokia Considering Windows 8 Tablets?

Now it would appear that Nokia could also be considering getting into the tablet market, with Microsoft’s Windows 8, As Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop recently told the FT, that Windows 8 could present an interesting opportunity for Nokia. We are looking for war to seeing what other Windows Phone devices Nokia will release next year, and the possibility for a Windows 8 tablet from Nokia sounds interesting.

Samsung To Launch Smartphones With Flexible Displays In 2012

We have been hearing rumors for a while now that Samsung has been working on some smartphones that will come with a flexible display, and now Samsung has confirmed that the company plans to launch devices with flexible displays in 2012. Samsung announced this during their recent earnings call, and Samsung’s Robert Yi hasd the following to say about Samsung’s new flexible display technology.

Apple iPad 3 rumored to use Retina Display for 10 inch screen

This one will sport a Retina Display-like resolution for its 10-inch screen. Retina Display will turn into a groundbreaking technological benchmark, with a pixel density so high, that the human eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels! The screen will boast a brightness of 550 nits, about 200 nits higher than a conventional laptop screen and Apple seems eager to begin rolling out 2,048x1,536 displays too.

Logitech Wireless Boombox for the iPad

Even though this product has “for the iPad” in its name, this is really false advertising. In reality, this product will pair and connect with any product that is Bluetooth compatible. If it doesn’t connect wirelessly, then you can use the included audio cable and connect it via 3.5 mm aux jack. These speakers have a rechargeable battery that is rechargeable, a NiMH battery that is good for six hours on a full charge. Assuming that you are carrying your Bluetooth compatible device with you, you can carry the Wireless Boombox on your shoulder like a ghetto blaster from the eighties. It also has a pop-out stand in the back so you can stand it up on a table or other flat surface. You should be able to get the Logitech Wireless Boombox now for about $149.99

Hisense and eyeSight to launch Android TVs with integrated gesture recognition technology

In an attempt to make a smart TV even smarter, the folks over at Hisense Group have teamed up with eyeSight Mobile Technologies to integrate its innovative Hand Gesture Recognition Technology into its upcoming Android smart TVs. Using gesture connected TVs, users will be able to perform various functions by using intuitive hand gestures thanks to the TV’s inbuilt 2D camera.

No longer will users have to worry about losing the remote control – just by waving their hands or making certain motions they’ll be able to switch channels, adjust the volume and more. Users will even be able to play games using hand gestures a la the Kinect (though I doubt the TV will have games as fleshed out as those found on the Xbox 360).

Microsoft cracks open a window to the future, anticipates our laziness

In the future, we'll all be slaves to rectangles. No, really. Well, at least that's the prognosis, albeit sanitized, Microsoft has slickly pieced together in its Productivity Future Vision concept video. It's a mostly seamless world where all of our interactions are made to be mobile, virtual, efficient and white-washed, but it actually just reads as too darn fussy and overcomplicated. Sure, we could get behind contactless payment, tablets with holographic displays and eyeglasses that translate conversations when you've just stepped off a red eye into some foreign destination -- that's all incredibly useful. But car windows with agenda overlays and transparent refrigerator door displays? Some things are better left lo-tech. For Redmond's part, the company's merely aiming to project ways these various implementations of "real technology" will intersect and "actively assist" us with our harried lives. Take a peek at MS' sanctioned tomorrow land and its sparse piano soundtrack after the break.

Mario Kart 7 Steering Wheel for Nintendo 3DS should help you drift past Toadie

It's no secret that Mario Kart 7 is due out in December, but it now appears that a certain 3DS-compatible steering wheel from Hori will be too. (Stoked?) According to Andriasang, Amazon's Japanese site listed the peripheral sans photos, pricing it at a cool ¥1,280 (about $17). Not long after that the blog snagged a few press shots of said unit, which looks like a odd blend of the iPhone-oriented Helix grip and Nintendo's own Wii Wheel. The attachment is said to feature tweaked shoulder triggers and Nintendo's Official Seal of Approval, but won't score you extra SlidePad functionality.

Kingston urDrive changes the way you view USB flash drives

urDrive will be a free pre-loaded application that will make its appearance on a range of Kingston’s DataTraveler USB flash drives, turning your average USB drive from passive storage mode to engaged, active storage. This will also enable consumers to easily access and organize your personal files, photos, music, games and videos. Heck, there will even be a built-in photo viewer and MP3 player that makes it a snap to check out your favorite digital moments, while rocking to tunes that bring back good memories. This particular diagnostic tool is capable of scanning for virus infections that will include spyware, worms and adware, while performing checks for slow performance as well as potential risks to identity and data. The inclusion of urDrive will also further enhance the digital experience with the Maxthon 3 Web browser. On the software front, it looks like the new Eee Pad will ship with the brand new Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” operating system, as expected.

Alibaba unveils W800, second-gen Aliyun phone, and unnamed 'cloud-powered' tablet

In July we got our first taste of Aliyun OS, running on the W700. Now, with the Gregorian calendar year coming to a close, Alibaba is prepping its second wave "cloud-powered" hardware. First up is the W800, the successor to the original Aliyun handset. As far as specs go, the two look more or less the same -- with the latest version still rocking a 1GHz Tegra 2. The one obvious difference is the slightly larger 4.3-inch display gracing the front of the W800. Perhaps more interesting though, is the still unnamed tablet which also clearly bares NVIDIA branding. Speed and exact model of the CPU inside is anyone's guess, but we're assuming this isn't a Kal-el device. Price and release date for both are a mystery, but the W800 is expected to land sometime before November is out.

Apen A3 Bluetooth for Smartphone

The Apen A3 advertises that it can interact with one’s smart phone screen in realtime. I will have to say that I have used two of these pens, and I wasn’t able to get it to connect with the Bluetooth on my Droid X, even though the A3 says it is compatible with Android OS 2.1 or above. In Apen’s defense, I have had problems connecting with devices before. However, I will have to admit as a device that can clip to a piece of paper, and then download the images onto a computer, this is probably the most accurate that I have tried so far. It can also store up to 100 pages wirelessly before you have to download them to a computer. Another handy feature is the Apen A3 can be used on a mouse with the computer. You can actually draw and see your results in realtime. Also included in the Apen package is Photo Sketcher software which allows the user to draw on images, and then share them on Facebook or Flickr. I will have to admit that I had some problems with the Apen A3, but if you can afford it, I will recommend it. It costs about $129.95 .
