Skype turns into Santa, gives you free airport WiFi during the holidays

They don't call this the "giving time of the year" for nothing. A couple of years back we saw Google hook up the traveling masses with gratis WiFi, and today Skype is matching the big G's kindness by giving you a holiday gift of its own. Starting on December 21st thru the 27th, you'll be able to cling to an hour of costless internet access while you're waiting on your flight -- as long as you're in one of the 50+ airports included in the deal (map shown after the break). Aside from being outside of the lounging areas capable of accepting the courtesy, Android users are being left out of the equation, as the present can only be used by those who own a Mac, PC or iOS device. Now, the nice gesture would be even better if we knew that our fellow travelers wouldn't be hogging all the bandwidth...

C Spire makes Sonim XP 3400 Armor available

I know, we focus mainly on the big four wireless carriers here in the US, but once in a while, far smaller carriers like C Spire come up with a handset that is not available elsewhere – case in point, the Sonim XP 3400 Armor ultra-rugged handset that targets those who live a rough and tumble lifestyle, or are generally working in a particularly hazardous situation that needs a phone which is able to keep up with the times. The Sonim XP 3400 Armor fits the bill perfectly, where it was specially engineered to exceed military-grade specifications for toughness, and is totally dust-proof, water submersible up to to 6.5 feet for an hour, and has been drop tested up to 6.5 feet onto concrete. The screen just won’t give way at that height or less, thanks to a 1.5mm thick scratch and shock resistant Corning Gorilla glass lens. Other hardware specifications include a microSD memory card slot, an integrated FM radio, an LED flashlight, a 2-megapixel camera, an omni-directional, noise cancelling microphone, a water-resistant speaker, a 2″ high-resolution display, all crammed into a combo of hardened rubber molded into a reinforced fiberglass case. Heck, just to get a better idea on how hardy it is, it has also been certified against salt, fog, humidity, transport shock, thermal shock and operates in temperatures ranging from -5° F to 130° F. How much would you need to fork out for the Sonim XP 3400 Armor? We are looking at $49.99 after a $50 reward card rebate, in addition to a new 2-year customer agreement

Ford's Focus Electric hits the production line, could be yours in January

After waiting eleven months just to profess your intent, what's another two before taking delivery of your Focus Electric? That's right, electric hatchback lovers, your pre-ordered chariots just went into production and will be rolling out of Ford's Michigan plant come January. Despite the looming delivery, the automaker has yet to reveal its official range. AutoBlog Green muses that with its 23-kWh pack it'll probably be good for about 70 miles -- comparable to its slightly cheaper competition, the Nissan Leaf, which eked out 73 miles from its 24-kWh juice box in official testing. Will Ford spill the beans before CES 2012? Definitively maybe, but in the meantime hit the source to see a bevy of snaps from the production line -- go on, with some luck it might just be yours.

Driven: The All-New 2012 Porsche 911

With the exception of some of the parts in the PDK, the piston, the crankshaft, the steering wheel, and a few other minor pieces here and there, the 2012 model is new from the ground up. The engines are revamped -- the Carrera has a new, more powerful, more efficient, 350-horsepower, 3.4L flat six under the hood, and the Carrera S has a more powerful and efficient 3.8L 400 horsepower six cylinder engine too. Also new is an industry-first 7-speed manual gear box -- really 7 speeds -- as well as a quicker-shifting and much revamped PDK. That's not to mention that the new 911 is bigger, both on the inside and out. The wheelbase is close to 4 inches longer with a little more than 2 inches added to the width. The wheels are pushed further out too, which makes a great-handling car perform even better. Porsche also has a slew of new parts under the sheet metal, including an electro-mechanical power steering unit, a new active chassis control system called the PDCC, a new torque vectoring system, or PTV, for better stability and control, as well as an entirely new Panamera-inspired interior to go with the brand-new and quite gorgeous exterior. What's Good We had a chance to drive the new 991 back to back to back with previous generation 911s, including the 997, the 993 and the 964. While the new 991 may look a lot like the previous generations, it's really like comparing apples and hand grenades against even last year's model. The drive on the 2012 Carrera S model we tested was amazingly good, with a quicker throttle response from the revamped DI engine and PDK package. The longer wheelbase aids in the handling too: Even on the soggy roads of California, we weren't afraid to push it, thanks to the new standard 20-inch wheels and tires. What's also good is the mellifluous sounding sports exhaust. The optional system gives you an improved exhaust package with better performance, as well as a deeper and more guttural sounding 911. When the sports exhaust is off, the cabin is as quiet as a German library on Sunday morning. During our testing we called this "Luxury Mode." When the sports exhaust is switched on, the 991 sounds like the Nurburgring on test day: we dubbed this "Awesome Mode," and it's really awesome. Also, the 911 has a larger backseat, so those of you with kids can explain to the husband or wife that yes, the 911 is practical to take the kids to and from school. Good luck with that.
For those looking for a more manual and less automated experience, you may be barking up the wrong tree. For that, try driving a 1995 993, or better yet a 1984 911SC. There you'll have all the Porsche you need, without all the techno-future gadgetry and safety controls that comes from the modern era. One can argue -- and a lot of people will -- that the 991 has a lack of sporty spirit. One can, but really I can't. The 991 is bad like a bar of gold is bad because it's too heavy. That said, the price is noxiously high: The model we tested was priced at more than 105,000 Euro, or close to $140,000. That's for a Carrera S, once can only imagine the price of the Turbo or GTS models. The Price The 2012 Porsche Carrera starts at $82,100 and the Carrera S starts at $96,400. We suggest the $1,190 "center tunnel rear in leather with decorative stitching" option, because you can't have too much leather or customization on your 911. Options and packages add up quickly. The Verdict Yep, best 911 ever. The new 991 is larger, faster, sportier, more efficient, and basically makes the last generation look as outdated as a four-button ventless suit with double-pleated pants. We loved the drive of the new version and feel it is the telos of the 911 model range. With its near-perfect blend of style, speed and technology, it's a surefire winner. Until the next all-new 911 comes out and starts the cycle anew.

Audi Connect

The Audi A7 is the world’s first fully Web-connected car. A built-in cellular data connection allows drivers to pull high-resolution 3-D aerial images from Google Maps into the navigation screen, dispatching with current cartoonish maps. Using voice commands or controls on the center console, drivers can also search phone numbers, weather maps, real-time gas prices from nearby stations, or Google “coffee shop” to look for a spot in the neighborhood. For safety reasons, drivers can’t pull up fantasy-football scores at a stoplight—but because the A7 generates a Wi-Fi signal, any passenger with a laptop can check them for you.

Brand-New Stratolaunch, the Biggest Plane in the World, Could Replace the Space Shuttle

The people who built the first private aircraft to fly into space are teaming up once again to construct the largest aircraft ever flown, a behemoth air-launched orbital cargo delivery system called Stratolaunch. And SpaceX, the first company to launch a privately built spaceship into orbit, will build the rocket. As a reusable rocket-plus-glider system, it certainly seems like a potential replacement for the space shuttle. Startup Stratolaunch Systems aims to build a humongous mothership-rocket combo craft, like a super-sized version of SpaceShipTwo. The effort combines the money of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, the aeronautical wizardry of Burt Rutan and the rocketry success (and, once again, money) of Elon Musk. Allen announced the plans at a news conference in Seattle Tuesday. “I have long dreamed about taking the next big step in private space flight after the success of SpaceShipOne — to offer a flexible, orbital space delivery system,” Allen said. “We are at the dawn of radical change in the space launch industry. Stratolaunch Systems is pioneering an innovative solution that will revolutionize space travel.” As if to punctuate Allen’s dream of providing a reusable orbital launch vehicle, former NASA administrator Michael Griffin is on the new company’s board of directors. Rutan, who retired from his company Scaled Composites earlier this year, is also on the board. Allen and Rutan won the Ansari X Prize in 2004 for building SpaceShipOne, the first privately developed vehicle to reach outer space. The effort led to Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo effort and ignited the space tourism industry. This new venture will extend the plane-launch system to orbit and beyond, Rutan said in a statement. The concept involves a massive parallel-fuselage carrier airplane, weighing in at 1.2 million pounds with a 385-foot wingspan (that's longer than a football field). It would be powered by six 747 engines and could fly up to 1,300 nautical miles to reach its launch point, and would require a 12,000-foot runway for takeoff and landing. The second part is a multi-stage rocket booster, based on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, and manufactured by SpaceX. It would be mated to the carrier plane with an integration system manufactured by Dynetics, an Alabama-based company. After the booster is released, the 490,000-pound rocket would heft cargo into orbit, on behalf of the government and commercial interests. “Human flights will follow, after safety, reliability and operability are demonstrated,” a Stratolaunch news release said. The huge aircraft’s space requirements will probably require it to operate from a launch facility like the Kennedy Space Center, but Griffin said the system would enable launches from a wide range of locations. “We believe this technology has the potential to someday make spaceflight routine by removing many of the constraints associated with ground launched rockets,” Griffin said. The announcement comes just months after the final space shuttle flight, and a few weeks before the first privately built spaceship docks with the International Space Station. The plane will be built in a Stratolaunch hangar, which will soon be under construction at the Mojave Air and Space Port, the company said. The aircraft's ambitious dimensions will likely invite comparison to another secretive wealthy aerospace enthusiast, Howard Hughes, who built the Spruce Goose. That airplane only flew once and is now on display in Oregon. Here's hoping Allen's effort fares a little better.

A Water-Propelled 'Dolphin Jetpack'

Some people go swimming with dolphins, enthralled with their easy movement through the water and the grace with which they occasionally breach the surface. Others, like Franky Zapata, make dolphins look pretty lame by comparison. Zapata, a professional jet ski racer and designer of the watercraft has created what he calls a Flyboard, a wearable apparatus that makes him part aquatic Iron Man, part dolphin analog, and all awesome. The Flyboard is something like the water-powered jetpacks we’ve seen before, but unlike those previous iterations that simply let a user hover above the water’s surface, the Flyboard propels Zapata both beneath the surface and above it, lifting him more than 30 feet in the air via water jets attached to the feet and hands. The cost to you: $6,400. We think you’ll agree it’s a small price to pay to be able to do what Zapata does in the video below.

Prada phone by LG 3.0 hands-on

This is the latest fruit to be borne from LG and Prada's renewed creative partnership. It's Prada Phone by LG 3.0 and it's also an attempt to marry fashion pedigree with, if not leading technological specifications, then at least competitive ones. There's a respectable 8 megapixel autofocus camera, and LG's bright, outdoor-friendly 4.3-inch NOVA display, here projecting an 800 x 480 WVGA touchscreen. It wears its Prada branding on its sleeve, and the fashion label's creative input has even gone so far as to affect the Android OS, with understated black and white themes papered over the cheerful -- in comparison -- Gingerbread interface Under the designer shell, there's a dual-core OMAP4430 1GHz processor and 8GB of internal storage, expandable by microSD. The camera, found just above the Prada logo, is an eight-megapixel shooter capable of full HD 1080p video, and it's auto-focus, naturally, ready for those sumptuous macro shots we all love. The screen is LG's NOVA display, and it's pretty bright. In fact we had to turn it down to avoid washing out our photos. The WVGA resolution may not be world-beating, but you're going to have no trouble in sunlight and other harsh lighting. Despite the 4.3-inch touchscreen, the phone measures in at under 9mm thick, and taking a tour around that edge, you'll find an MHL port at the top, supporting micro-USB connectivity and media streaming and flanked by the two-stage camera button and power button. The volume rocker's found on the left edge, and there's also a subtle row of four Android capacitive keys along the base of the screen. Although both LG and Prada are keeping quiet on that premium price tag the moment, the phone is expected to arrive in South Korea and Europe first, and we've been told to expect a release in the UK in January 2012, alongside a medley of pouches and other branded accessories. You can expect a gallery of those very soon.

Multitouch Tempered Glass Keyboard And Mouse

Most of the time we end up wanting gadgets just because they’re designed really sleek and cool. Don’t look too far, as what you’ve seen above could be literally one of them with Jason Giddings’ concept of a multitouch keyboard and mouse. The sleek looking concept of the mouse and keyboard is made from a special curved piece of tempered glass that works along with couple of cameras in the base and IR module. Here’s a brief explanation on how this futuristic keyboard and mouse works: The design is based on a touch screen technology known as FTIR or Frustrated Total Internal Reflection. There are basically infrared LEDs placed at the edge of the glass. In this case, they are hidden inside holes where the glass is mounted to the metal base. Because of the low angle at which the light impacts the internal glass surface, it is bounced around inside the glass, much like looking through a tube to see the reflections on the inside walls. When the glass is touched it frustrates the reflection and the IR light is diffused downward, out of the glass, allowing the camera to see it. Software then determines the location and sends the appropriate information to your computer. Live at KickStarter now, the project is eying for $50,o00 pledges goal that was ultimately surpassed now with 435 backers generating a total of $109,538 with 23 days to go. Now don’t be surprised if you’ll be seeing one of these alien-like keyboard or mouse in the office. If you want to go ahead and pre-order, it’s $150 for the mouse, $250 for the keyboard, or $350 for both. Though obviously it isn’t cheap, but look at them.

Tokyoflash Kisai On Air timepieces

The timepiece around your wrist has long gone beyond its function of telling the current time, but rather, become a fashion statement instead. Well, one of the names that consistently challenge the way you look at the watch would be Tokyoflash, where some of their zanier creations do require you to put on your thinking cap but for a moment before you can figure out the current time. Needless to say, that applies only to digital timepieces, and when you have analog watches from Tokyoflash, they are more of the eye-candy variety than anything else. The Tokyoflash Kisai On Air watch would be the latest in a long line of watches, where you can choose from several different LCD colors that include natural, red, green, blue and orange. It is going for a limited time launch offer of $179 a pop, where once expired, the final sticker will head back to a buck under $200.

186Gbps is new Networking speed record

Just how fast do you think your home Internet connection is? Does 10Mbps, or even 100Mbps make you feel as though you are king of the world? Well, just like in life for most of us, there is always someone else out there with something faster, bigger and better than what we own – with the researchers over at the California University of Technology (Caltech) managed to hit a new world record where data transfer is concerned, touching a combined rate of 186Gbps (gigabits per second) within a wide area network circuit*. To put things into perspective, 186Gbps translates to moving 2,000,000 GBs each day, which is fast enough to transfer nearly 100,000 full Blu-ray discs, where each of them will comprise of a complete movie and all the relevant extras, in a single day. You will not find such a connection arrive for commercial use anytime soon though, but at least there is a new bar to beat for record seekers. *While a wide area network can cover a city, it may also be a private network, and not “The Internet”

Superheadz Clap Camera

Now here is a really tiny digital camera that is sure to attract your attention – the $50 Superheadz Clap Camera. It is super tiny, and needless to say, at this kind of size, it makes perfect sense for the controls to be extremely simple. Shooting 2-megapixel stills or movies in 720 x 480 resolution, all your favorite digital memories will be stashed away on a microSD memory card, and whenever it becomes full, just empty all the data by popping off one end to reveal a USB connector that lets you plug the Superheadz Clap Camera into a nearby computer, transferring all the memories via USB. Definitely one of the cuter cameras to own for casual purposes, if you want something even slightly more professional, we would recommend you pick up a proper digital camera, never mind if it is part of a compact digital camera range.

Game Strap concept keeps commuters entertained on the way home

Taking the train home from work is usually a rather boring affair, but designer Jiang Qian has come up with an idea that could make the commute a bit more entertaining while maintaining safety. Dubbed the Game Strap, it essentially transforms the handles that people hold on to while riding the train into a gaming platform. Sure there is the option of playing a handheld console like the Nintendo 3DS or the PlayStation Portable, but unfortunately that usually leaves you with both hands occupied which could prove dangerous as you might lose you balance when the train starts/stops. By implementing a gaming platform into these handles, Jiang Qian ensures that commuters will be entertained during the ride home while staying safe. It will feature a small display which will be activated when the handle or strap has been grasped. Buttons are integrated into the sides of the handle allowing users access to it via their thumbs while still maintaining a grip on the handle. So far games like shooting, pinball, tetris and freekick have been suggested as quick and simple games that passengers could play during the commute. It’s a pretty decent idea but unfortunately it appears to remain a concept for now.

$300 LED TV packs DVD Player in its being

Combining a display with a media player is the way to go. It saves you the space you need to free up on that already cluttered shelf and you also know what's the whole fuss behind the integration of devices thing. So the iView TV comes into play with a side loading DVD player. Apparently. what we're looking at is a LED backlit LCD screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio. It handles resolutions of up to 1366x768 pixels, a 15..5-inch size, a contrast ration of 1000:1 and a 6ms response rate. There are good things said about the color reproduction as well. Additionally, this particular iView TV also packs an ATSC tuner, thus making 1080p video support possible and a pair of integrated 3W stereo speakers. $300.

P.S. it's not a Vita: Yinlips' Android-based YDPG18

Don't call it a KIRF -- it's a Yinlips "Android Smart Game Player." Which is to say, it's an Xperia Play-like experience wrapped in PS Vita clothing. So basically, yeah, it's a KIRF. This form factor doppleganger hails from China and lacks the internal quad-core pizazz of the Sony next generation handheld it purports to be. Instead of standing on the precipice of portable gaming, this 5-inch pretender will net you a hum drum FroYo / Gingerbread-based (even its own website couldn't decide) OS packed with a slew of old school gaming emulators (from NES to N64), an array of ports including HDMI, a single core 1.2GHz processor complemented by 512MB of DDR2 RAM and WiFi. It's a must have device for, well, no one. But if you're the type who likes to burn money and carry about a virtual collection of video games past, then by all means, import away.

Samsung to unveil 11.6-inch tablet with a display better than Retina

The rumor birds in the tech blogsphere are fluttering with the news that Samsung might be busy prepping up an Android 4.0 driven 11.6-inch tablet with a stunning 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution that might put Apple’s Retina display sweat a bit. The tablet here is expected to be unveiled at upcoming MWC congress this February, it is believed it will be ‘barely larger’ than its 10.1-inch sibling owing to the panel having a thinner bezel here. Apple’s upcoming iPad 3 is going to make up for the absence of Retina display in iPad 2 and with Samsung too planning to dole out a better version, it would be quite a sight to see both of these guys up against each other. It is also rumored that Samsung tablet here will be powered by the 2.0 GHz Exynos 5250 processor which is although only dual-core, the ARM Cortex-A15 chip and the more accelerated graphics should lead to much faster performance overall. This spec sheet will work well to match 2560×1600 screen resolution here. Besides, it is also being said that the tablet will have a pixel density of 260 which is way higher than any comparable device on the market. So if any other tech giant wants to hop in here, it better make sure that it matches with the stellar resolution at least.

First 128Gb NAND Unveiled by Micron and Intel

A new 128Gb NAND has been unveiled by Micron and Intel. A 128Gb NAND is the first of its kind in the world and when in production it will be used on devices such as smartphones, tablets and other similar devices. The new NAND was created using 20nm process which is the same as a 64Gb version that is now entering production. We also hear that the larger version will be made available through samples this coming January ready for a mid year 2012 launch. With the 64Gb version already in production it will allow a quick transition to the larger version. Note that the 128Gb NAND is small and when combined with eight die it will allow for a device that reaches 1Tb in capacity.

Senseg created the first silk touch screen

Senseg is the Japanese company that has managed to create the first working prototype of a touch screen with an amazing sensory function. More specifically, this screen surface can play a variety of physical sensation on a touch, imitating the texture of objects on the screen. The screen named “Feel Screen” works by applying electrostatic fields that are felt to the touch and also read some real tactile sensations. According to the company, producing the effect is achieved by creating and controlling a small attractive force, occurring between the surface of the screen and the user’s fingertips. The simulation of this technology allows a wide range of textures and effects such as rough surfaces, edges and vibration. Senseg promises that we can enjoy new sensory experience regardless the screen size of the device. As advantages, the new technology can improve your experience using touch keyboards, adding a noticeable separation between the virtual keys represented on the screen. Some commercial versions of the screen “Feel Screen” are ready for mass production even during the next year, but the first devices incorporating such a screen will appear in stores probably not earlier than 2013. Stay tuned for more details about Senseg.

ASUS to debut display swiveling ultrabook in 2012?

A few days ago we reported that according to a rumor, future ultrabooks could be seeing touch screen functionality. As to whether that will be a feature many will be looking forward to remains to be seen, and it appears to further corroborate those rumors, Digitimes has once again come forward and stated that according to their sources, ASUS will be debuting a new ultrabook in June at Computex 2012 that will feature touch screen capabilities. It seems that their sources have revealed to them that ASUS is planning an ultrabook for 2012 that will not only be powered by Intel’s new Ivy Bridge processor, but will run on Windows 8 while featuring a swivel based design (as pictured above). This design would allow the ultrabook to transform into a tablet running on Windows 8 with touch screen functionality. Given how ultrabooks were meant to bridge the gap between bulky laptops and tablets, if this rumor is true, ASUS could very well be blurring those lines with their ultrabook/tablet hybrid. Will this piece of rumor come to fruition? We guess we will have to wait. Until then taking this with a grain of salt is probably just what the doctor ordered.

BlackBerry Milan smartphone to sport BlackBerry 10 platform

After having recently rechristening the BBX platform to BlackBerry 10, news in regards to Research in Motion’s first BlackBerry handheld device to sport the same has just been leaked. The new BlackBerry will soon be the flagship for the smartphone brand and is called the Milan. A slider, somewhat drawing along the lines of the Torch and the London concept phone, this one also seems to lack the usual BlackBerry menu button, the call button, the disconnect and the back key, instead choosing to stay free from any of those previously used time-tested designs. Also, the phone is expected to sport a 720p high-resolution display=, that could pretty much other smartphones out there seem silly and insignificant.

Has James Bond gone green? Bulletproof electric roadster in the works

Warding off assassins while saving the environment just became a cake walk with the Jo-Mojo, an upcoming creation by Estonian armored vehicle company DARTZ. This two seat convertible roadster brandishes an 80 horsepower electric engine capable of pushing zero to 60 mph in 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 125 mph -- yet most of its "mojo" is outside the hood. Custom seating, color-changing chameleon paint finish, bulletproof tires, and others are just a few of the many "drooling" features. The sunroof is given a task with flexible solar panels built-in, good for juicing up the batteries while idle or on the go. Aimed to hit the market at the end of Q2 2012, its estimated price tag starts at 30,000 euros (~ $40,000), within range of most low-end luxury automobiles. Check past the break for a video slideshow of this snazzy piece of metal by Gray Designs, DARTZ's partner in the venture.
